Commissioning work

People are often nervous at approaching me to commission an individual piece. I don’t know why as I have made loads of stuff over the years!

Commissioning simply means ordering a new piece of silverware from me, which I will then create especially for you. Very little of my work is held in stock, so I usually have to make the pieces that you can see on my website.

Prices on the website, with the exception of the Christmas Decorations, are meant as a guideline only, as the price of silver can vary according to the market.

The basic information I need is an idea of your budget and timescale. Then, has any of my current work inspired you? Is it for a special occasion? Would you like it engraved or personalised in any way? Are there any size constraints?

Based on our discussions about the commission, I can start working on some sketches for you and give you an idea of timescales. When we have agreed on a design I will ask for half the money upfront to start making it, then the balance when it is ready for delivery. Payment is usually done by cheque or bank transfer. I frequently personally deliver my work as I feel the handing over of it is an important stage of the process, and I want the commissioner to be able to handle, use and know how to look after the piece confidently, and sometimes the easiest way to convey this is to show them. Sometimes pieces take several weeks to make, and some clients have found it interesting to visit me at my workshop, in Sheffield, to see the work in progress.

"Chris took a very vague commission -'A pair of silver spoons for a couple on their wedding day' and generated several beautiful ideas. We were able to select features of the individual proposals and merge them into a final design which was exquisitely executed (and photographed at each stage as a permanent record). The spoons were available on time and are cherished by their new owners." Rob Herric.

"The stars arrived this morning. As usual – the photos don’t do them justice. We are very pleased with them." M Chiverton.

"Thanks again for the work you put into the bookmark. I was really pleased with it! However, more importantly, my husband was absolutely thrilled with him." Sarah Bingham.

"I commissioned Christopher for my wife's engagement ring and it still draws gasps of delight when anyone see's it. Brilliant Silversmith." Matthew Glossop.
